Supported units:
meter or metre - m; Metre or meter is a SI unit of length. It is one of the seven SI Base Units. "Metre" is the internationally accepted spelling for a measurement of length, whereas the "meter" spelling is typically used in the United States. Throughout this page we use the "meter" spelling.
millimeter or millimetre - mm; Millimeter is a multiple of the base unit - meter. One millimeter is equal to 1/1000 meter. Millimeter is often used to express dimensions of small objects or when higher precision is required. For example: for drill bit, wrench, bolt, and nut sizes.
centimeter or centimetre - cm; Centimeter is a multiple of the base unit - meter. One centimeter is equal to 1/100 meter.
decimeter or decimetre - dm; Decimeter is a multiple of the base unit - meter. One decimeter is equal to 1/10 meter. Comparing to other metric length units, decimeter is used rarely.
kilometer or kilometre - km; Kilometer is a multiple of the base unit - meter. One kilometer is equal to 1000 meters.
inch - in; Inch was historically derived from the English system and eventually redefined as multiples of SI Units.
Inch is defined as the length equal exactly to 25.4 millimeters or 2.54 centimeters.
It is also equal to 1/36 yard or 1/12 foot. Inch fractions (for example: 1/2,
1/32, 5/16, etc.) are used to describe the lengths and dimensions smaller than an inch.
The denominator of the fractions is a power of 2 number in the range between 2 and 64.
The double prime symbol (″) is generally used to represent inches, however, for convenience, a double quotation mark (")
is often used instead.
thou or mil; Thou or mil is equal to 1/1000 inch. It is typically used to measure thickness of various material.
foot - ft; One foot is equal to 12 inches. The prime symbol (′) is generally used to represent feet, however, for convenience, a single quotation mark (’) is often used instead.
yard - yd; One yard is equal to 3 feet or 36 inches.
mile - mi; One mile is equal to 1760 yards.
nautical mile - NM or nmi; One nautical mile is equal to 1852 meters.
