About GAINS benefit

The Ontario Guaranteed Annual Income System (GAINS) provides a monthly, non-taxable benefit to low-income seniors in addition to the federal Old Age Security (OAS) pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) payments. Together, the total maximum benefits from OAS, GIS and GAINS is the guaranteed income level.

The guaranteed income levels for October to December 2025:

  • for seniors between 65 and 74 years old:
    • 1935.52 monthly for single pensioners
    • 1495.50 monthly for married/common-law
  • for seniors 75 years and older:
    • 2009.53 monthly for single pensioners
    • 1569.51 monthly for married/common-law

To qualify for GAINS payments an individual must:

  • be 65 years or older;
  • have lived in Ontario for the past 12 months or for a total of 20 years since turning age 18;
  • have been a Canadian resident for 10 years or more;
  • receive the federal OAS pension and GIS payments;
  • have an annual income below the predefined applicable thresholds.

GAINS payment amount depends on pensioner's annual net income or, in the case of a couple, the combined family income. The maximum benefit of $90.00 per month is payable to pensioners with income below a certain threshold determined by the pensioner's marital status. Individuals with income exceeding the threshold will receive a reduced payment.

To receive GAINS payments, individuals must file their income tax return with the CRA and complete a GIS application. GAINS benefits will be determined based on the information received from Employment and Social Development Canada and the income details from the tax return. To avoid any disruption of payments, tax return must be filed every year by April 30.
